What is Assisted Living?

retiredassistedAccording to the Assisted Living Federation of America (ALFA), “assisted living is a long-term care option that combines housing, support services and health care, as needed. Assisted living is designed for individuals who require assistance with everyday activities such as meals, medication management or assistance, bathing, dressing and transportation.”Assisted Living means more SERVICE. Not everyone who lives in Assisted Living requires medication management, but it’s available. Some may need help with medication, but have no need for bathing assistance – every resident is different. John-Wesley Villas of Savannah offers several different levels of assistance, and they can change as the resident’s needs change. Some of the Assisted Living services at John-Wesley Villas include:

All meals and snacks

Housekeeping and laundry

Medication management

Assistance with bathing

Assistance with dressing

One common mistake made when thinking about Assisted Living is waiting too late. Many of the tours we give are for seniors who have taken a fall, mismanaged their medication, or have another health issue that could easily have be prevented with supportive services. Here are a few things to think about when asking whether a loved one is ready for Assisted Living:Have you noticed any change in the seniors behavior? Are they eating healthy meals daily? Do they confuse their medicines? How is their hygiene? Are they staying in more and have stopped most activities? Our team at John-Wesley Villas of Savannah can help you to know when, as well as what retirement option is best.
